City Council
West Lafayette City government is divided between the Mayor and the City Council. The City Council holds the City's legislative authority and makes the laws through ordinances, orders, resolutions and motions. The City Council has final authority over the City's property, finances and appropriation of monies. Most of the Council's powers are outlined in Title 36 of the Indiana Code.
The Council has two representatives appointed to the Area Plan Commission, which serves as Tippecanoe County's metropolitan planning organization.
Council Members
The West Lafayette City Council is comprised of nine elected Council members. The City is divided into six districts with one Council member elected from each district and three council members elected "at large." Council members are part-time elected officials who serve 4-year terms and may run for re-election as often as they wish. Each year, the City Council elects a Council President who presides over the meetings.
If you would like to email all of the Councilors, you may use CityCouncil@westlafayette.in.gov. Please note that the Clerk's Office staff will also see the emails to the CityCouncil email address. As with all government emails, anything sent to the Councilors by any means may be available to the public if requested per Indiana's Public Access Laws. The City Council generally meets the first Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 222 N. Chauncey Ave., West Lafayette). The Pre-Council meeting -- in which the members discuss the agenda -- when held, occurs the Thursday before the Council session and is also held in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Finding Your Council District
One option to find your Council District is to look at the District Map. Another option is to use the Tippecanoe County Beacon Portal: Property Search or Interactive District Map Layer. Note: if you live in an apartment building, it may help to use the address of the main office if your building's address does not return results.
Note that along with your direct representative, the three At Large Council members serve all citizens.
The Clerk's Office will be happy to help you find your Council district if you have any difficulty.
