Fire Suppression

Team:

The Fire Suppression Division is the department's largest division. The West Lafayette Fire Department consists of 46 professional firefighters who are responsible for the safety of the West Lafayette community. It is comprised of three shifts (A, B, C) and each firefighter works a 56-hour week (24-hour shifts that alternate). There are a minimum of 15 firefighters and officers on duty working under one Battalion Chief. Remaining administration includes Chief, two Deputy Chiefs, two Inspectors, and an Administrative Assistant.

 

Insurance Service Office Rating:
The Insurance Service Office's (ISO) Department of Public Protection Classification determines a city's classification, based between 1 and 10 (1 being the best prepared for a fire emergency, 10 being the least prepared). West Lafayette's ISO rating is 2 (less than 6% have an ISO rating of 2 or higher.)

 

Services:

WLFD is an all-hazards fire department that, along with fire protection and emergency medical services, provides; stand-by medical support at large public events; assistance with WLPD on non-emergency calls; response to hazards such as natural gas leaks and utility pole/power line hazards; responses to HazMat, Rope Rescue and Structural Collapse emergencies; community education; and child safety seat installation.

 

Training

The Training Division provides comprehensive training and educational programs to ensure that we are prepared to accomplish the mission of the West Lafayette Fire Department. Trainings are focused around firefighting emergency medical services, rescue, and hazardous materials incidents.

Fire Prevention

Mission: 

The Fire Prevention Division's mission is to provide the highest level of life safety, environmental preservation, and property protection from fire hazards.

Responsibilities:

The Fire Prevention Division's primary responsibilities include educating the public through lectures, outreach programs, and school visits; preventing potential disaster with inspections, plan reviews, and a free smoke detector program; and if necessary, investigating.
